Football agent FAQ
Straight answers on becoming an agent, what agents do, money, commissions and rules. This is general information, not legal advice: always check FIFA’s and your federation’s current regulations.
Becoming an agent
What is a football agent?
A football agent is the professional who represents players, coaches or clubs in contract and transfer negotiations. They bring the parties together, negotiate salary, length and conditions, and look after the client’s interests throughout the career.
How do I become a football agent?
Under FIFA’s agent regulations in force since October 2023, you need an agent licence: pass the FIFA exam, have a clean record and meet the insurance and registration requirements. You then still have to build a client portfolio, because the licence alone does not bring players.
Do I need a licence to be an agent?
To represent players or clubs in international transfers, yes: FIFA’s regulations require the licence. Working in scouting, data or analysis does not require a licence, and that is where many people start.
What is the FIFA agent exam like?
It is a written multiple-choice test on football regulations, held by FIFA on fixed dates and in several languages. Format and dates change, so always check FIFA’s official agent platform before you register.
What an agent does
What does an agent do day to day?
They watch players, talk to clubs, negotiate contracts and renewals, follow the athlete’s routine and handle relocation, image and sponsorship matters. Much of the job is maintaining relationships with clubs, directors and families.
What is the difference between an agent and a scout?
A scout watches and evaluates talent, usually for a club or an agent, and does not represent the player in contracts. The agent represents the athlete and negotiates on their behalf, which is why FIFA regulations apply.
Are agents and intermediaries the same thing?
“Intermediary” was the term in FIFA’s previous regulations, which scrapped the licence in 2015. The current regulations speak again of a licensed “football agent”. In practice people still use both names.
Money and commissions
How do agents make money?
Mainly through commission on contracts: a percentage of the player’s salary or of the transfer fee, paid by the player or the club depending on the deal. There is also income from image rights and sponsorship.
What percentage commission does an agent get?
Historically it sat around 5% to 10%. FIFA’s 2023 regulations set caps that vary with who hires the agent and the size of the deal, but those caps have been challenged legally and their application may vary. Check what applies today in your country and with FIFA.
Who pays the agent: the player or the club?
It depends on who hired them. If the agent represents the player, the player generally pays, although the agreement can provide for the club to pay on their behalf. What matters is that the amount and the payer are written in the contract.
How much does a football agent earn?
It varies enormously. Most independent agents earn little because they depend on a few clients, while agents of elite athletes receive huge commissions in a single deal. There is no reliable average salary.
What does it cost to work as an agent?
There are licence and exam fees, liability insurance, travel, time spent at matches and events and often years without income until the first deal. Plan your cash flow for that period.
Can I charge young players for an “opportunity”?
No. Charging players or families for trials and places is the classic scam in the industry. A serious agent earns commission on signed contracts, not by selling promises. If someone asks for money upfront for a trial at a European club, be suspicious.
Rules and contracts
What should a representation contract include?
Parties, term, scope of services, commission and who pays, termination conditions and, where relevant, image rights. It must be in writing. Because the maximum term is usually limited by regulation, check yours fits the rules.
How long can a player be tied to an agent?
FIFA’s regulations limit the length of a representation contract, generally to a few years, with renewal by agreement. Check the current maximum term before you sign.
Can an agent represent minors?
There are stricter rules for minors, including parental consent and limits on international transfers. Breaking them can lead to sanctions, so any deal involving minors needs extra care and documentation.
Where can I check whether an agent is licensed?
Through FIFA’s official agent platform and your national federation’s register. Before signing with anyone, ask for the licence number and confirm it in the official register.
Market and career
How does an agent find players?
By going to lower-division and youth matches, following data and video, working with scouts and receiving referrals from coaches, clubs and other agents. Market data helps find players who are not yet on the big clubs’ radar.
How do I present a player to a club?
With a short, factual dossier: position, age, contract, height, career path, full-match video and performance data. Clubs receive many offers, so clarity and credibility count more than hype.
What is the transfer window?
It is the period in which clubs can register players, set by each federation. There is usually a longer window in mid-year and a shorter one at the start of the year. Outside them, generally only free agents can be registered.
What is a free agent?
It is an athlete with no contract with any club, who can sign without a transfer fee. For the agent it is an opportunity, because the commission comes from salary and there is no fee to pay to the former club.
What is a sell-on clause?
It is a clause under which the selling club receives a share of the value of the player’s future transfer. It is common when young prospects are sold and must be clear in the transfer contract.
What is a release clause?
It is an amount set in the contract that, if paid, lets the player leave without negotiating with the club. It is common in Spanish football and some other markets, and its use depends on national law and regulations.
How does Sportsmercato help agents?
Sportsmercato brings together public data on players, clubs and competitions so you can search and compare. We are building an area for agents, with a player portfolio and commission records. The data comes from public sources and may be incomplete: confirm with the club or the player before negotiating.
